A typical morning routine
would go something like this: your alarm goes off. You press the snooze button
about three to four times before it registers in your brain that you have to go
to work and participate in the real world in just a matter of hours. You go downstairs
to make your coffee, maybe breakfast too, if you feel up to it. While you're
drinking your first cup of coffee, you turn on the TV to the morning news. You find
yourself noticing that it's always the same kind of stories; just different
people, different places, a different day. Most of the headlines either involve
politics or crimes. The crimes usually involve either a known or unknown
suspect that murdered an innocent person. Most of the time, the victim was
shot, and there was no given reason as to why the suspect shot them. This is
where forensics comes in and CSI and police do everything they can to solve the
crime. But the news never goes into intense detail about forensic evidence;
just the basics and they only skim the surface of their findings. Even still,
you finish up your coffee and then you precede the routine of getting ready for
work because you’re used to hearing about these types of things even though
they are so horrific.
In an article found on the Washington Post's website called, Authorities
Search Area Where Kayaker Was Shot and Wounded On Saturday Night, dated
back to April 14, 2014 and was written by
Arelis Hernandez and Justin Jouvenal. They report on a shooting that took place
on Anne Arundel creek. David E. Seafolk-Kopp was kayaking along the creek when
a bullet grazed him. After many hours of being in pain in his kayak, he ended
up making it back on land to receive medical attention. Fortunately, the shot
was not fatal. The authorities that were spoken to after evaluating the crime,
they believed that the shot was unintentional due to the bullet being fired
from far away. The authorities also observed the wound and he bullet and
narrowed it down to a particular pistol but they still had to do analysis and
sent it to the lab for further testing.

In this case, the bullet and the victim
are the only two things they have to base their whole investigation on. This
will certainly make things much more complicated given there were no witnesses
and no one else around when the shooting occurred. I would start out by
searching around the creek with search dogs and looking around for any bullet
casings. Once the bullet was narrowed down to a specific type of gun, I would
then try and see who has purchased this particular type of gun. However, this
has its fair share of limitations. In most cases, guns that are used in crimes
are stolen and there are no records of the people owning them. This is a huge
reason why most crimes that involve guns are not solved because it’s extremely
difficult to track down a criminal when you have no idea who you’re even
looking for.

Kristen,
ReplyDeleteIt is sad that everyday we are able to wake up and enjoy a peaceful morning while some people do not get the chance to do that anymore. Regarding the article that you mentioned, why did you chose that particular article? Do you think that it was really unintentional? Was Mr. Kopp kayaking in a hunting zone? And don't you think that it's a little too late to have search dogs out scouting the area because all the evidence by now would be trampled by other visitors? I do not want to delve into politics, but it's scary how easy it is to purchase or to obtain a gun these days. Are we ever as safe as we think we are…?
Kristen,
ReplyDeleteThat is interesting post and its unfortunate someone got hurt. This crime must have been a result of poor gun safety as bullets can travel more than a mile if there is not something to stop it. In analysis of the bullet I believe it is possible to trace it to a type of gun by bullet size. The investors would probably have to have possession of the suspected gun used in the crime to compare bullets fired from it to see if there are similar marks. But of course that is just my educated guess. I will have to make sure I follow this story I am not sure how investors and law enforcement will find the gun or the suspect especially in a case like this. Accidents can happen with guns if safety rules are not followed just like with cars.

ReplyDeleteI really liked reading your article it is like reading a book. I also like that you stated what you would do it brings us readers closer to you as the author. Likewise I like your background for your blog it kinda looks like blood splatter!
After reading your blog I realize why so many cases end up not being solved especially if all that is left is a dead body with a bullet in them. I cannot imagine how frustrating it has to be to have to solve a case just by a single bullet. Like you said some guns are stolen and have no record which makes it even harder to solve the case!
Overall fantastic blog I can't wait to read the rest of them!
Hi Kristen,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your article again, and I felt this time, it was more interesting because you addressed your post as a reporter. Based on very smooth transition from your daily experience to the main topic, also I really liked your conclusion about this specific situation that pointed out the main evidence as the bullets and the victims. I realized that how much our modern scientific investigation skill has improved over the time.
Kristen - How scary! I'm from Colorado and I'm always afraid I'm going to get shot when I'm wandering around the mountains out there. At least during hunting season, people are required to wearing bright orange to prevent people from shooting at them, but this kayaker wasn't even in an area where he should have been worrying about getting shot at! Maybe we should require all kayakers to wear bright orange, too.. rather, we should educate all gun owners so that they handle their weapons safely.

Kristen,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your blog. The story about the kayaker is a fascinating one. You were spot on in your description of the reality that we mostly don’t pay attention to stories beyond what is given in media accounts. I have often found myself watching the news and wondering if there is any good news. It seems like they can’t let an entire day go by without reporting on someone getting shot in some fashion. In the case of school shootings, I think the media does more harm than good. It seems anymore like most of the school shootings are cases of copycat shootings.
It seems very unlikely that this was an accident. The odds of a Kayaker being struck by a bullet a long range unintentionally seems very unrealistic. I mean if you think a about it you have a bullet less than an inch in diameter travelling 300 or so meters and just happens to hit a moving kayaker. I think you have better luck playing the lottery. This seems to be a well aimed and taken shot that was meant for him. I think with any additional safety training this shooters shoot would have likely been a deadly one.
